Places Of Interest
The Island of Lundy lies 10 miles off the coast of North Devon where the Atlantic meets the Bristol Channel. A place of outstanding natural beauty. Skies full of birds, pirate haunts, seals, Lundy ponies and the lovable puffin.
The South-West Coast Path - 630 miles (1,014 Kms) passes through Clovelly and is ideal for a short stroll or a good day’s hiking. There are some circluar walks of varing difficulty.
This is truly a great walking area, the path runs from the top of the cliffs to right down onto the beach as it meanders along the coast, sometimes in the open and other times on the deeply wooded slopes. For more information see www.swcp.org.uk
From Westward Ho! it will take you between 5 and 6 hours of, in places, strenuous walking - passing by Abbotsham and Green Cliffs, Portledge and Bucks Mills to get to the easier Hobby Drive - a few miles from Clovelly.
The path continues from Clovelly to Hartland Quay and will take from 4 to 5 hours. Firstly along the cliff edge up Gallantry Bower to Mouthmill, up Brownsham cliff and Windbury Head. Then rather easier passing Exmansworthy, Fatacott, the Titchberries to Hartland Point. Here there is an excellent refreshment kiosk which is open from Easter to October. The path then turns south, up and down, to Blackpool Mill and finally past the old rocket house to Hartland Quay.
Hartland Quay here you can look back at the stunning coastal scenery and amazing cliffs, layers of slate- stone folded every whichway many millions of years ago. The sea can be spectacular here as it thunders against the rocks and cliffs as this is the first landfall from Canada across the Atlantic Ocean.
